Salt Lake City A new publication is now available for career planning, or just finding a job the new Career Guide, from the Department of Workforce Services. The publication is packed with helpful advice on how to assess skills, personality and interests. This publication is for anyone who has finished high school no matter what age or training level.
The major feature of theCareer Guide is the Career Chart. This comprehensive list of Utah occupations gives the description, wages, projected demand, and training required for each occupation listed. Because it contains the occupations that nearly 80 percent of working Utahns hold, its an excellent overall source of information about jobs in Utah. Occupations are ranked using a 5-star rating system, based on how many jobs will be available in the future and their wages (by training level).
"The Career Guide is an excellent tool that encompasses much of the essential information Utahns should have when making decisions about their current and future careers," says DWS Workforce Information Manager Stacey Joos. "In todays economy with many Utahns out of work, it is essential for job seekers to be informed about the career decisions they are making. I would encourage anyone looking for work to dig in and do some research on the occupation(s) they are considering. Many are opting to retrain for other occupations, sometimes occupations that are completely different from their former career. What is crucial is figuring out what you may need to add to your set of skills to keep you competitive. Furthering your education may be the answer."
The new edition of the Utah Careers is now on the DWS website. The entire publication is on the Web, and it can be printed, photocopied and used by anyone. Printed copies are available at any DWS employment center and are free of charge. For more information about the content, contact the editor, Kim Bartel, at 801 526-9457.
